How to Compare Competing Tape Quotes: Spotting Spec Tricks Before You Buy

October 15, 2026

The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest tape. When three suppliers quote “the same” carton sealing tape at three different prices, the specs behind those prices are usually not the same at all — different units, different test methods, different things left unsaid. Some of it is innocent; some of it is not. Either way, here is how to normalize competing quotes before you compare a single price.

1. Normalize the units first

Tensile strength quoted in N/40 mm looks nearly 60% higher than the same value in N/25 mm — because the test strip is wider, not because the tape is stronger. Peel adhesion in oz/in vs. N/25 mm (multiply oz/in by ~0.27), thickness in mil vs. µm (1 mil = 25.4 µm): convert every number to one common unit before ranking anything. A quote that resists unit conversion is telling you something.

2. Ask for the test method behind each number

A peel value without a method is not a value. 180° peel vs. 90° peel, dwell time before testing, stainless steel vs. your carton board as the substrate — each choice moves the number. Shear results depend on load and temperature. When two TDS sheets disagree, the first question is never “which number is bigger” but “were they measured the same way.” Reputable suppliers state the method; the absence of one is itself data.

3. Read what is missing

Quotes compete on what they show and win on what they omit. No stated shelf life. No application temperature range. No storage conditions. No lot traceability. No mention of RoHS or REACH for export markets. Every missing line is a risk you inherit — add the cost of that risk to the quote before comparing.

4. Do the roll math

Compare price per meter, not per roll. Check total length per roll, core inside diameter, and width — a “cheaper” roll carrying 10% less tape is not cheaper, and a bargain roll that does not fit your dispensers or case sealer is not a bargain at all.

Quote comparison checklist

Demand on every quote Why it matters
All values in common units N/25 mm, µm — converted by you, not by trust
Test methods stated Peel angle, dwell, substrate, shear load and temperature
Shelf life and storage range A tape without a stated life has an unlimited excuse
Application temperature range Your winter warehouse is not the lab’s 23°C
Roll length, width, core ID Price per meter; fit with your equipment
Compliance statements RoHS, REACH, and lot traceability for export

JL3 quotes every SKU with stated test methods, common units, and full traceability — contact us through the inquiry form for a specification sheet you can compare line by line. Values are laboratory averages; qualify on your own cartons before committing volume.
