In-House Tape QC: Three Bench Tests Every Buyer Should Run Before Approving a Supplier

A supplier’s TDS tells you what the tape did in a laboratory. It does not tell you what the tape will do on your cartons, in your dust, through your winter. Before you approve a supplier — or accept a full container — run these three bench tests. They take under two hours, need no special equipment, and catch the failures that actually cost money.

Test 1 — The 72-hour seal test

Seal six of your own cartons with the candidate tape: two at normal line speed, two applied by hand, then store two in the coldest and two in the warmest spot in your warehouse. Inspect at 24 and 72 hours. Pass: all six seals intact — no edge lift, no flagging at the corners. Fail: any pop-off or lifted edge. If the adhesive and your board are not a match, no TDS number will save the shipment.

Test 2 — The peel-back check

Apply a 20 cm strip to your carton board, rub it down hard, wait one hour, then peel it back slowly at 180 degrees. Pass: the tape fights you — board fibers tear and stay stuck to the strip. Fail: a clean peel with no fiber tear, or adhesive coming off in patches. Fiber tear is the gold standard: it proves the bond is stronger than the board itself.

Test 3 — The unwind and edge inspection

Unwind three meters and inspect the roll, not the seal. Pass: smooth, quiet unwind; clean slit edges; no adhesive ooze on the roll sides; the roll sits flat without telescoping. Fail: noisy or jerky unwind, sticky edges, visible ooze, or a roll that telescopes when tapped on the bench. Roll defects become seal defects at the worst possible moment — usually at full line speed.

Score it like an auditor

Run all three tests on every candidate and record pass or fail. A supplier passes with three passes — two out of three is a no. Keep the tested cartons, note the roll’s manufacture date and lot number, and you have a baseline: if a later shipment behaves differently, you will know exactly what changed.
