How to Size a Case Sealer for Peak Season: A Machine Selection Guide

October 21, 2026

Most case sealers are not bought wrong because the machine is bad. They are bought wrong because the buyer sized for an average day and then met a peak season. A machine that idles in September becomes the bottleneck in November: changeovers eat the shift, operators revert to hand taping, and the "automation" you paid for sits bypassed at the end of the line. Peak-season planning starts with three numbers you already have — daily carton volume at peak, carton size mix, and what your site can actually support — and this guide turns them into a machine decision.

The three numbers that decide the machine

First, peak daily volume — not the yearly average. A line that seals 400 cartons on a normal Tuesday and 1,400 on a promotion day must be sized for the 1,400, because that is the day the overtime starts. Second, the carton mix: one repeating box size is a fundamentally different job from ten sizes arriving in random order, and maximum carton weight matters as much as dimensions. Third, site constraints: compressed air availability, power, floor space, and whether operators are dedicated to the line or pulled from picking. The rule: write these three down before looking at any brochure. Every mistake below comes from skipping this step.

The volume tiers: where each machine class earns its place

Under 200 cartons a day: stay with a dispenser. A powered water-activated tape dispenser such as the KN-366Hi holds 1,400-foot rolls, carries 2.7 liters of water, and dispenses on a hand wave — the operator keeps moving, and every carton gets the tamper-evident fiber bond of water-activated tape with no machine footprint at all. Below this volume, a sealer’s capex buys you nothing but floor space lost.

200 to 1,500 cartons a day: semi-automatic is the sweet spot. This is where a machine first pays for itself. The KN-1717U runs a 22 m/min belt, handles cartons up to 430 × 430 mm in cross-section with no practical length limit, and takes cases up to 38 kg — its gravity-fed water tank and top/bottom sealers (run together or independently) mean no compressed air and quick manual size changeovers. Where cartons run larger or heavier, the KN-2626U steps in with 8–13 cartons per minute and a side-belt drive that holds the box square through the seal. One caution for this tier: if your sizes change constantly, budget the changeover minutes honestly — manual adjustment is cheap per change but expensive per day at high mix.

Over 1,500 a day, or random mixed sizes: go fully automatic. The KN-1721R adjusts itself to each carton’s width and height in Random mode — mixed sizes flow without an operator touching a crank — and locks onto the first carton in Uniform mode for long single-SKU runs. Both ends of the decision tree converge here: volume alone, or mix alone, can justify the step up.

Building a new line from flat cartons: pair an erector with the sealer. The CE1720U-S forms and bottom-seals cases at 5–11 per minute, and the TS-1720U folds flaps and top-seals at the same pace — matched speeds mean no buffer pile between stations. The rule: buy the tier your peak day needs, not the tier your average day flatters.

Three expensive mistakes, all preventable

Mistake 1: sizing for the average. The machine is judged on the ten worst days of the year. Size for peak, and the other 355 days take care of themselves. Mistake 2: ignoring the size mix. A semi-automatic with manual adjustment is a bargain for one box size and a bottleneck for twelve — that is exactly the case Random mode exists for. Mistake 3: spec’ing the machine without the tape. Check compatibility before purchase: tape width ranges differ by model — 60–76 mm on the KN-1717U and KN-1721R, 50–76 mm on the KN-2626U, 48–76 mm on the CE1720U-S and TS-1720U — all on rolls up to 500 mm outside diameter. A machine that cannot take your standard roll width, or forces more frequent changeovers on a small-diameter roll, quietly taxes every shift. The rule: peak volume, size mix, tape compatibility — confirm all three on paper before signing.

Decision table: volume to machine

Peak daily volume Machine class Representative spec Upgrade trigger
Under 200 Electric tape dispenser 1,400-ft rolls, 2.7 L water, hand-wave dispense (KN-366Hi) Operator can’t keep up on peak days
200–1,500, uniform sizes Semi-automatic sealer 22 m/min belt, cartons to 38 kg, no compressed air (KN-1717U) Changeovers eat the shift
200–1,500, large/heavy cases Heavy-duty semi-automatic 8–13 cartons/min, side-belt drive (KN-2626U) Volume outgrows manual adjustment
Over 1,500 or random mix Fully automatic sealer Random/Uniform auto-adjust modes (KN-1721R) Adding a second line
New line from flat cartons Erector + sealer combo 5–11 cases/min each, matched pace (CE1720U-S + TS-1720U) —

Pre-purchase checklist

Run this list before the purchase order, not after installation: (1) peak-day volume documented, with the promotion calendar attached; (2) full carton size and weight range confirmed against the machine’s min/max — all three dimensions at once, not one at a time; (3) tape width, core size, and roll diameter matched to the machine’s 48–76 mm / 500 mm limits; (4) utilities verified — air at 0.6–0.7 MPa where required, power, and floor space for infeed/outfeed; (5) a trial run on your actual cartons and tape, timed over a full shift. The last item catches more problems than the other four combined.

JL3 builds the tape and the machines as one system — water-activated kraft and reinforced grades matched to dispensers, semi-automatic, and fully automatic sealers, with line-layout support from erector to sealer — contact us through the inquiry form with your peak daily volume and carton range and we will size the line with you. Machine specifications are typical values from product TDS documents; run a trial on your own cartons before committing.

We are ready to provide you with the best solutions for your packaging needs.
